The stunt took place on during commemorations at Verdun - scene of one of the bloodiest battles in military history, where some 330,000
soldiers lost their lives most of them French and German troops, in 1916

Some 3,400 children ran among the graves of soldiers who died in the battle of Verdun as part of a stunt choreographed by German filmmaker
Volker Schlondorff, who argued that he was 'trying to depict the chaos of the battle'
But on Sunday, as French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel paid tribute to the fallen, many said the 'commemorative
run' was in poor taste.
Issues, policy and Economics
Climate change
Week ten
Objectives
• To develop an understanding of the economics
of climate change
• Recognise that climate change is an externality
and the “greatest market failure in the world”
• To understand the potential impact of climate
change and the need for economic policies to
stabilise the problem
• To examine the disaggregated impact of climate
change on developed and developing countries
• Recognise and discuss the possible polices
which can be used to control climate change
Introduction
• Scientific evidence is overwhelming
• Climate change presents very serious global
risks and demands an urgent global response
• Lecture material is based primarily on “The
Stern Review”, (2006) and his speech at the
RES Annual Conference, Manchester, October
2006
– Commissioned by the then Chancellor Gordon Brown
– Reporting to Gordon Brown and Tony Blair
– Aim was to contribute to understanding of the
economics of climate change
Introduction
• Effects of our actions now
– Little effect on climate change in the next 40 –
50 years
• What we do in the next 10 – 20 years
– Can have a profound effect in second half of
this century and the next
Introduction
• Cannot predict climate change with
complete certainty but we know the risks
– Need mitigation – strong action to reduce
emissions
– This is an investment
• Incur costs now and in coming decades to avoid
the risk of severe future consequences
• If done wisely, cost will be manageable and will be
a wide range of opportunity for growth and
development

he sights and sounds of our
Incoming President Chancellor
Bob Corlew’s home state, Tennessee,
are many.
At the upcoming Normandy talks we call upon you and Chancellor Merkel not to force Ukraine’s
hand in accepting any form of peace deal that will compel Ukraine to hold elections while the
occupied territories in Donbas remain a police state under Russian control.
Although it contains less than one-half of the chapters which are commonly assigned
to that version, we may conclude that Ani's exalted official position as Chancellor of the ecclesiastical
revenues and endowments of Abydos and Thebes would have ensured a selection of such chapters as
would suffice for his spiritual welfare in the future life.
But
politicians elsewhere would be wise not to
predict that newcomers it has accepted will one
day go home, as Angela Merkel, then Germany’s
chancellor, said of refugees in 2016.
